During the 2nd Congress of the BRICS Council of Exercise and Sports Science (BRICSCESS), Prof. Hans de Ridder was announced as the new President of the organization. He will only be the 2nd president in the history of the organization. This happened during the Board meeting on the 12th of October 2019, at the Congress which was held in Cape Town, South Africa. Prof. Hans is currently the director of the School of Human Movement Sciences at the North-West University and also a C1 rated reseacher with the NRF of South Africa. The new secretary-general of BRICSCESS, will be Prof Ricardo Uvinha form Brazil, replacing Prof. Hans who previously held this position.
The foundation of the BRICS Council of Exercise and Sports Science (BRICSCESS), is the outcome of an idea first conceived during the 18th International Scientific Congress held in 2014 in Kazakhstan. Under the combined leadership of Prof. Ming-Kai Chin (Hong Kong-China), Prof. Hans de Ridder (South Africa), and Prof. Ricardo Uvinha (Brazil), BRICSCESS was founded. History was made when the BRICS Council of Exercise and Sport Science (BRICSCESS), was founded on the 17th of October 2015 during a meeting at the Manav Rachna International University in Delhi, India. The other two founder members is Prof. Gulshan Khanna from India and Prof. Maria Abulkhanova from Russia.
With regard to the future of BRICSCESS, Prof Hans has the following vision. “With the BRICS countries that account for 42% of the world’s population, it is extremely important that our organization focus on the importance of exercise and physical activity on the health status and total wellness of our BRICS nations. Even more important is the promotion of physical activity in our youth in the BRICS countries. Childhood obesity is of great concern to us and we need to teach our children from a very young age to exercise, to eat healthy and overall to be healthy. They are our future and if we fail our children, we have no future”.
The 2021 BRICSCESS Conference, will be hosted by Professor Xiaozan Wang at the East China Normal University in Shanghai in China. Another very successful program of BRICSCESS, is there Future Leader/Volunteer (FLV) Program. This program was founded by the previous president, Prof Mingkai Chin and recognizes and mentors emergent global scholars dedicated to continuing research and development of their profession. They must also be passionate about serving local and global communities. The are chosen for their innovative and interdisciplinary approach, active participation and contribution to active and healthy living strategies.
